Why have one when you can have two of the top coaches in Safa Western Cape’s ABC Motsepe League’s Second Division?
That is what the Grassy Park United Chairman, Zahier Witbooi (pictured centre), orchestrated when he roped in the well-travelled and successful tactician in Andrew Pequeno (pictured left) for the upcoming 2026/’27 season.
Pequeno, a serial winner of note, will join forces with another wily old fox coach in Mangaliso “Shakes” Ntombana (pictured right) at Grassy Park to bring much anticipated success – and Witbooi has now definitely raised expectations with the addition of Pequeno to his coaching staff.
One cannot blame Witbooi for upping the ante as he’s side has been blowing hot and cold season in and season out. Consistency, or rather the lack thereof, was one of GP’s main factors for falling short every season. And with the addition of Pequeno to the technical team, there’s definitely a renewed sense of belief that this could be their season where they go all the way.
Witbooi is well aware that he now has a coach that doesn’t muck around and one that is driven by success and his recent track record speaks for itself – one promotion title and Two Nedbank Cup regional titles during his stint with Vasco underlines Pequeno’s pedigree. Not to mention his promotion league and success with Hanover Park FC prior to that.
The 51-year-old Pequeno, who is currently assisting Montague Spurs at the Cape District Football Association LFA until the new Motsepe League season commences in the next following weeks, explained to No Bones with Jones. ” We are building a tech team and a playing squad to compete this season.
“It’s not going to be easy in Stream B as we need to overcome the challenges of traveling as well as the competitive nature of each team. Grassy Park has a very good foundation that has been laid from the last few seasons and I am honoured and happy to be a part of this club. This project has been many years in the making and we are now joining it as it goes on its upward curve,” Pequeno concluded.
