Those who thought that Safa Cape Town’s investigation into the Goalgate playoff scandal has come to nothing and that it will be swept under the carpet, well think again.
No Bones with Jones has been reliably informed that a date will be set this Wednesday for the resumption of the investigation which rocked football in Cape Town during the Third Division playoffs last year at the William Herbert Sports Complex.
This will also be the same platform where Safa Cape Town’s prosecution will submit their closing arguments in the case between the Mother Body and the Cape District Football Association.
Safa CT will commence proceedings with West Coast City and Electric City to shed some more light on the Goalgate investigation.
Despite the broader football public’s perception of Safa CT, to the region’s credit, it is trying its utmost to get to the bottom of the story.
This was shown when they appointed a top legal expert Sean Lea who assisted Safa CT’s deputy president and the head of the investigation, Andrew Bothman – in resolving the most controversial and biggest scandal in Cape Town amateur football.
One recommendation made by Lea is that the organisation should be given legislative powers to punish those who fail to adhere to the requirements of the football body. This was in reference to Two For Joy who deliberately did not pitch for any of the hearings to explain their role in the scandal.
The Helderberg LFA affiliated club subsequently apologized and admitted that they were not forthcoming to assist the investigation.
Our website understands that the committee is patient and wants to leave no stone unturned hence the screws will be turned up another notch.
This was to probe the freakish score lines when 58 goals were scored in two matches in Group H, dubbed as the “Group of Death” which included Rebels FC, Two For Joy, West Coast, Electric City and Diadora FC.
Two for Joy had to beat West Coast and Diadora needed to replicate that against Electric City. The eyebrows were raised in the second half of Diadora and Two for Joy’s respective matches when it was raining goals in both matches which had the tongues wagging.
In the end, Diadora FC topped the group with a 35-1 scoreline and progressed to the quarterfinals on goal difference of +38, while Two For Joy had +36 following their 22-0 win.
