Day one of the 35th edition of the Bayhill Premier Cup was categorised by record scores and upsets.
While coach Casey Prince’s Ubuntu Academy annihilated Westridge United Football Club by 9-0 in one of the early kick-offs at the Easter spectacle played at the Erica Park Sports Complex in Belhar, the Safa Cape Town Academy humbled the more illustrious Cape Town City by 1-0, thanks to a second half goal by Liam Philander in the last fixture of the day.
Casey’s Ubuntu has undoubtedly laid down a marker and sent out an early warning that they mean business with four players each getting a brace.
The astute mentor and coach however pointed out that despite their positive start, it is still early days to get carried away.
“We have two really difficult fixtures ahead and it is of paramount importance that we remain grounded and focussed and not to underestimate any opponent,” Prince told No Bones with Jones.
His counterpart from Safa CT Goodwin Lewis echoed his sentiments following their rather surprise victory over the young Citizens.
“This result is a big boost for us and it is important that we build on this,” Lewis told our website.
Another surprising result was that of Stellenbosch FC when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Rebels FC from the Lingelethu LFA.
Meanwhile one of the debutants SSS Football Academy got their campaign off to a winning start when they edged out fellow amateur side Elsies River United by 1-0.
Young Bafana Academy, who are making their second consecutive appearance, got the better of a resilient Clover FC by the same scoreline in one of the earlier fixtures.
