Rygersdal FC’s veteran striker Danian Wareley (pictured with ball) has hit a purple patch and according to his coach Ashraf Calvert, long may it continue.
In fact, Calvert probably feels vindicated following his decision to lure the 38-year-old ex-pro from Ashford Athletic to Rygersdal a couple of weeks ago.
Needless to say, Wareley has made an immediate impact and rewarded Calvert for his choice with another brace during a 3-1 win over Wanderers FC at Meadowridge Sport Complex on Sunday.
Now, these heroics come off the back of the two goals he scored when they beat Young Pirates by 3-1 which also secured maximum points for Rygers a day prior.
So, it’s fair to say this newcomer to Safa Cape Town Third Division League has been nothing short of impressive – and their second position on the log is proof – albeit six points off the runaway log leader, Saxon Rovers, who also played a game less.
Be that as it may, Calvert now knows he’s found the missing link he needed on attack. Calvert explained to No Bones with Jones: “I wanted him even before he went to Ashford and he told me that Curtley (Daniels) already asked him – I still asked, are you sure?
“It’s because I know how we play and all we needed was a striker that can score goals. Somebody that can shoot on target, whether outside the penalty box or inside, you know. Somebody that can hold up the ball, play with back towards goals and that can get on the end of the crosses in the box, you know.
“He also adds that experience and as you know we have one of the youngest squads in the league, so his experience is valuable to guide the young ones. He also takes the load off others before he was here, the goals were largely shared amongst other experienced players like Fernal, Alphonzo, Topley and others who all have about 6-7 goals apiece, so it was spread out, you know.
But now with Danian in the team, he’s taken up the responsibility and is banging in goals and,” Calvert added.
Rygers, who is unbeaten in eight matches, are in action on Wednesday when they travel to the Hickory Road Astroturf to face Silver Spurs who are improving slowly but surely after they have clawed their way out of the relegation zone.
Meanwhile the pacesetter Saxons have a tricky fixture against Greenwood Athletic on Tuesday evening and ‘Assie’ as Calvert is affectionately called, is hoping that his former Greenwood-side can possibly cause an upset to allow them to close the current 6-point gap on Saxons.
