Valhalla’s Guardian Angel: The Coach That’s Changing Lives One Child at a Time

In the dusty streets of Valhalla Park, where gang violence and poverty often overshadow dreams, one man has quietly built a sanctuary of hope.

Ashley Olivier, development coach of Valhalla United, is not a household name — but for the young players he mentors, he is a life line

Olivier’s own playing career was cut short by injury, but instead of walking away from football, he turned his setback into purpose and that’s to give back.

Through Ash’pirational Sports Development (a continuous improvement program) launched back in 2019 he has dedicated himself to nurturing talent at grassroots level, ensuring that football is more than just a game — it’s a tool for survival, discipline, and opportunity.

The unselfish Olivier is indeed building futures in Valhalla Park and this is evident with the dozens of children who gather under Olivier’s guidance.

They come not only for drills and fitness, but for mentorship, meals, and a safe space away from the lure of gangs.

Olivier’s holistic approach — blending sport with education (working with primary school programs as well) and life skills — has produced remarkable results against all odds.

Players such as Yaseen Minnies, who secured a place at the Kaizer Chiefs Youth Academy, Toufeeq Jackson (Cape Town Spurs) and Breyton Cleophas (Antalyaspor JMP) are among the success stories to emerge from the programme.

Olivier also points to Faiz Abrahams as one of the finest talents to come through Valhalla United’s ranks, while the latest professional player to emerge from the club is exciting winger and striker Raoul Daniels.

Despite increasing interest from scouts, agents and rival clubs, Olivier remains focused on the bigger picture.

“This was never about me,” he says. “It’s about creating opportunities for every child who wants to be part of something special.” Oliver pointed out to No Bones with Jones.”Since the start of the  Ash’pirational in 2019 we have had great numbers from the start with every school holiday a packed training camp of +-70 kids,” he added.

Oliver further elaborates: “Faiz Abrahams has been the best prospect from his u9 playing days at Valhalla United that we knew he will be the one who will make it to professional football. What a player to enjoy who always made everything look easy as he was very advanced as a junior player amongst his teammates, very humble but hungry.

“I now have the opportunity to work with his brother who’s playing in a star studded u12 team (Coach Weesaam). We are definitely cooking up something for the future,” Oliver concluded.

As Valhalla United continues to develop both footballers and future leaders, Olivier’s greatest achievement may not be the players who make it professionally, but the countless young lives being steered towards a brighter future – and the club’s black and yellow colours have become a symbol of hope, and Olivier is helping ensure that the next generation keeps dreaming.
