Kiyaam Bull(ish) on a Return to the Pro Ranks with Grassy Park United

Former Amajita defender Kiyaam Bull remains firmly focused on one goal, securing a return to professional football.

The 27-year-old centre-back is currently on the books of Grassy Park United in the ABC Motsepe League Second Division, but insists his ambitions extend far beyond the amateur ranks.

Bull, who represented South Africa’s national Under-20 side and won the COSAFA Cup at youth level, believes the shrinking professional football landscape in Cape Town has made the journey more difficult for aspiring players.

However, he remains committed to putting himself in contention for another opportunity.

“You know it’s a bit difficult not having so many opportunities in Cape Town anymore,” Bull told No Bones with Jones “Not just for me, but for every aspiring footballer. All I can do is put my best foot forward at all times, keep my body in shape and put in the extra work, especially when nobody is around.

“I think that’s the hardest part of it all, having the mindset to keep going even when things are not going your way. But like I said, I will always put my best foot forward and leave the rest to Allah.  Inshallah (God willing), we will gain promotion and be back in professional football.”

Bull is currently working under respected coach Andrew Pequeno, a mentor he previously played under during his time at Vasco da Gama.

The lanky defender says the experienced technical team at Grassy Park has created an environment where players are encouraged to express themselves and maximise their potential.

“Working with coach Andrew is always a breeze,” said Bull. “He always reminds us that we were chosen to be with him for a reason. He knows our quality and wants us to express that quality as best as we can. Along with coach Shakes, coach Adnaan, coach Thuls and coach Webber, they complement one another because there is a lot of experience within the group.”

Although best known for his defensive work, Bull has shown he also possess and attacking side to his game – and has a power shot on him as well.

The towering defender grabbed headlines with two spectacular long-range strikes so far this season, including one against Ammar Soccer Academy, helping Grassy Park United earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw.

Away from the pitch, Bull credits much of his growth and development to his grandfather, respected Sea Point Swifts stalwart Fuad “Archie” Hendricks.

“My grandpa is a very special man, and I can see he is well-loved and well-known,” Bull said.“He is very supportive and always gives advice and pointers. I’m very lucky and grateful.”

Bull’s football journey began in 2015 when he joined the Ajax Cape Town academy from the Old Mutual Academy. He went on to represent the club at various junior international tournaments and was also part of the MultiChoice Diski Challenge setup.

His career has since included spells with La Masia in the Motsepe Foundation Championship’s First Division and Black Leopards. Now, as Grassy Park continues their promotion push, Bull remains determined to prove that his story in professional football is far from over.

The well-travelled defender believes persistence, faith and hard work will eventually open the door back to the professional game.
