Even through adversity, Farouk Abrahams’ ability to bring people together is admirable.
This was once again evident when Abrahams, who was diagnosed with stage four cancer, hosted a very successful walking football festival at the Football Kings Fives court in Hadjie Ebrahim Crescent, Rylands on Sunday in order to raise funds for his exorbitant medical costs.
So much so, it prompted a beautiful message from the philanthropist and Chairman of Sekunjalo Investments, Dr Iqbal Surve, which read:
“Thanks for a wonderful day yesterday. Once again, you made it possible to see so many people I have not seen for years. You are a wonderful leader and community builder. May Allah (God) grant you many more years to do all these good things,” the message stated.
It was pretty clear that Surve and the legends who supported the event had a ball of a time trying to master the art of walking football – which was easier said than done – especially for those legends that are still very mobile with the ball at their feet.
The likes of Duncan Crowie and his legends side brought down the curtain on the day’s proceedings with an exhibition match against the so-called top guns, Walking Football Cape Town, which was a tightly contested affair.
All in all, it was a day of fun. laughter and reconnecting with old friends. Needless to say, there’s definitely new respect for walking football after Sunday’s exciting exhibition of how ageing football players could prolong their time in the game.
Abrahams concluded by adding: “I am happy to have helped to increase the interest for this format. Take a bow Walking Football CT.”
