Langa boss slams SAFA CT over Engen Cup, with ‘Rygate lurking’

Zolisa Tungwana (pictured), president of the Langa LFA, has accused Safa Cape Town of not acting according to procedure and not in the best interest of its constituents.

Tungwana’s comments follow after he also caught wind of the fact that the Rygate LFA has put in an application to host this under18 event for boys and girls.

Wanderers FC has hosted the three-day tournament – which features 16 teams from across the city – after they replaced Parow-based Vasco da Gama, who has hosted the Cape Town leg of the competition at Parow Park since 2015.

Last year’s event was severely dampened by flooded playing fields, as well as some of the infrastructure that collapsed, injuring a goalkeeper in the process, coupled with the two seasons prior affected by the Covid19-pandemic.

No Bones with Jones is in possession of the mail whereby Tungwana reached out to the region on Friday (8 February) stating that they are still seeking confirmation on their application made on 16 February 2024 to again host the Engen Knockout Challenge for a fourth time.

“The region as decreed custodians of football in the Metro has an onus to treat and respect its members equally, a simple letter or email to Langa Ndabeni LFA advising them of the new direction the region is taking would have meant something.

“A living example would be if Wanderers FC sends a reminder to us enquiring about the progress of their application what do we say to them? When the federation is ignoring us, neglecting us basically,” Tungwana said in a letter addressed to the Mother Body.

The Langa football boss has also taken a swipe at the region accusing them of being unfair.

“The conundrum is that the region is taking steps that are not procedurally fair against its members while they expect the same members should stick to their statutory requirements while that can never be fair.

“As we conclude we want to put on record that we are fully aware of the Rygate LFA’s application dated 4 March 2024 to host this prestigious tournament while no circular was sent to LFA’s advising them to apply,” Tungwana stated in his email to Safa CT.
