It’s a pity that Hanover Park FC’s Chairman Rieduwaan Anthony is not in the best of health, as it was rumoured that ”Waanie” would have gone head-to-head with the current Safa CT president, Bennett Bailey, in the race for the leadership of this football organisation in Cape Town.
Bailey, better known as “The Buffalo” in local soccer circles, is seeking a historic third term when the elections take place next month.
It would have been interesting to see how Anthony, a wily old fox himself with decades of experience and success as a football player, coach and administrator, would have fared,
Needless to say, Anthony’s historic achievements with Premier United and now Hanover Park FC in the past will live in the memories of many football fans.
Furthermore, it has elevated his status amongst the football and broader public and is revered and respected by many, which suggests that the former Athlone LFA president and Cape Town Tygerberg Vice President would have really garnered support and could have been a popular choice.
His outreach work especially within the Hanover Park area also shows where his heart lies. and that he is a man for the people.
Alas! There’s another really interesting development that very few saw coming. And even though he is not as much in the spotlight as Anthony in recent times, no one can deny the credibility and pedigree of the Wanderers FC Chairman, Eric Gum (pictured).
No Bones with Jones can confirm that Gum’s name has been thrown into the hat as a candidate for the Safa CT presidency after he was nominated by the Metropolitan LFA on 15 January 2026.
Unfortunately, Gum’s nomination was not accepted by the region due to a technicality but No Bones with Jones understands that the matter is currently receiving the necessary attention.
Gum, a former Safa CT Vice-president as well under the then President Norman Arendse. In fact, Gum was at one stage also earmarked to succeed Arendse but it was Bailey who took over in 2018.
With history between these two football administrators, it appears as though the football public could be set for another intriguing battle, which will serve as a precursor for next month’s elections.
