They came, they saw, they conquered – against all odds!
This is exactly how the debutants Herzlia High School stamped their authority in school’s football after winning the under 14 section of the Western Province-leg of the Kay Motsepe Championship.
The school situated on the slopes of Devil’s Peak in Vredehoek, beat Itsitsa Primary from Mfuleni by 2-1 in the final at Elsbury Park on Friday afternoon.
And it is no wonder that the school’s principal Shane Brorson – who was also in attendance – described their feat as the “proudest day in the school’s sporting history.”
“They came through the Round of 32, Round of 16, quarter-final, semi’s and today we won the final in the last minute,” Brorson told No Bones with Jones.
“I think the whole event has been an incredible experience for our boys. We played against schools that we normally don’t play in the league and to come out and win it is very special,” the headmaster added.
Brorson emphasized that their success goes way beyond football as it allowed the players to make new friends.
Brorson drew parallels with the 1996 (Afcon) sqaud that united the nation irrespective of their different backgrounds, race and colour.
“That is what sport is all about, it brings people together,” Brorson further stated.
“It is about getting out in other areas and meeting other kids and just enjoying the game of football so for us it has been a fantastic experience.
Like the 1996 Afcon squad that brought people together and to see the excitement here today it was just fantastic.
“You’ve seen the support we got here and yeah it is probably the proudest day in our sporting history and I am really chuffed for them,” Broosen concluded.
Meanwhile Herzlia’s head coach Nahum Prince said he was at a loss for words with his team’s success.
Our first ever Motsepe Cup and we won it,” Prince stated.
“We will now represent the province and I am so happy for my boys as they have worked extremely hard for this. They really deserve this.”
Herzlia will now represent the Western Cape at the provincial finals which takes place on the 29th and 30th September on the West Coast.
