Surprise package Paarl United hoping for home draw in Nedbank Cup last 32

How is it possible that you beat a team with the quality and depth like FN Rangers only to lose a (provincial) Cup Final against a team that is in a lower division?

I guess that is why they say that anything can happen in a final and the old cliche ‘the team who wants it more’. It also highlights the David vs Goliath aspect which is what the Nedbank Cup is all about.

And while Desmond Crowie’s Maties FC is licking its wounds and wondering what could have been, Paarl United is on cloud nine after they have booked their place in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32.

Needless to say, it marks a historic occasion in the club’s history that will probably for a long time not be repeated.

The Paarl-based outfit got the better of their more influential rivals for the Cape Winelands with a 1-0 win in the SAFA Western Cape Nedbank Cup final at their Mbekweni Stadium on Saturday.

United’s coach, Malunga Siyaka explained how his side overcame the odds to create an historic achievement in the club’s short existence.

”To be very honest we did our homework and prepared for them,” Siyaka told No Bones with Jones.
”But we had to dig deep and work hard against a quality side like Maties FC. We forced them to play long ball. and it worked out in the end.

”We are only two years old and for us to achieve this is amazing. We dedicate this to our fans and also the club owner, Mr Thuli Kanda.”

According to Siyaka they are hoping for a home draw to gain maximum advantage against the big fish and more influential opponents.

”This will mean such a lot for our fans and they deserve this. We don’t worry about who we get. We just want to push our brand further,” he added.

Meanwhile, Crowie described it as a “bad day at the office”.

“We could’ve played another 90 min and still not score,” he said. “So sad, but we live to fight another day.”
