Sea Point Swifts (Hope FC) veteran attacker Ruzaigh Gamildien described their historic ABC Motsepe League title as a “glorious achievement.”
Gamildien’s comments came after Swifts defeated Diadora FC by 1-0 during the Safa Western Cape’s provincial final at the William Herbert Sport Complex on Sunday.
“I’m so happy and proud as it is my second time winning the ‘Vodacom’ (Motsepe) league,” Gamildien stated to No Bones with Jones.
“The previous occasion was with Mitchells Plain/ Santos back in 2009/’10. But that is way back and it makes this title a glorious achievement,” Gamildien added.
The 37-year-old former PSL star has been a revelation since joining Swifts for their debut season in the Second Division with a contribution of seven goals and two assists.
His experience, coupled with his guidance, has rubbed off on the younger players in the squad. He also leads by example and that has been invaluable for the newbies thus far.
Along with other ex-pros such as captain Craig Martin and others known as “The Generals” will have to draw on all their experience to help Swifts get over the final hurdle at the playoffs, which will take place in Umtata early next month.
“Look, for me it’s all about adding value and giving back,” Gamildien further added. “I’m blessed that I’m still able to play the game at my age and compete with the younger generation. They really keep me on my toes,” the former Chippa United and Royal AM player added.
