We need to look at new Motsepe League proposal with positive eye, says Bennett Bailey

The newly proposed additional rural stream for the ABC Motsepe League might still be in a deliberation phase and not cast in stone as yet, but the anticipation and excitement is tangible.

No one is more upbeat than Safa Cape Town’s president Bennett Bailey about Safa Western Cape’s decision to make the Second Division more inclusive for teams from outside the Cape Metropole.

Bailey has shared his delight with No Bones with Jones saying it is indeed a step in the right direction: “In principle I support the idea,” Bailey told our website. “Obviously, the mechanics need to be worked out, but in the interest of development, growth and inclusivity, a program involving the whole province should be considered. This allows regions to redesign their regional leagues, thus ensuring upward mobility of top-flight football,” Bailey said.

Bailey has in the same breath warned about the adverse effect it can have on the broader football landscape should the South African Football Association give the green light for Safa WC to implement their new restructuring process.

“The danger of decimating local leagues, especially senior and youth football is there,” Bailey pointed out.
“The same concerns were raised with the formation of the first, second and third divisions. However, nature has a habit to resetting itself for the betterment of the game. We need to look at the proposal with a positive eye,” the Safa CT boss concluded.

Meanwhile, Safa WC’s chairman Tankiso Modipa informed our website recently that the formal presentation will be sent to SAFA National in due course after being amended by the PEC members as it has been suggested.

“Only then if they are satisfied it will be sent to SAFA National Competitions Committee for approval, as soon as that has happened we shall have a media briefing to explain the plan in detail going forward,” Modipa added.
