Bennett Bailey, deputy president of Safa National and president of Safa Cape Town, has reminded the veterans present at the draw of the Silver Spurs Legends Festival to never underestimate the role that football has played in their lives.
Bailey was the guest speaker at the launch of the 10th edition of this event – for over 35, over 45 and over 50 players – held at the Silvertown Baptist Church on Wednesday evening.
“The fact that you are here tonight is an indication that you all have a common passion,” Bailey explained.
“You could have been anywhere else, but you committed to attend this event. That tells me how much you love and value the role football has played in the lives of the working class – so, never underestimate this.
“My message to you is play the game hard, fair but most importantly, play with enjoyment,” the Cape soccer boss added.
Meanwhile, the tournament director, Victor Tajoodien, has appealed to the participating clubs to be tolerant towards the referees during the Festival which takes place from the 25th to 29th October at the Johnson Road Sports Field in Rylands.
“Remember guys, without them (refs) a game cannot go ahead, so even if you disagree with the ref’s decision, keep your cool and respect the decision made,” Tajoodien added.
Spurs’ chairman, Enver Zeeman, also chipped in when he reminded the audience that he was vindicated to not sell off their club to Baltic Rangers many moons ago. The club was established in 1969 and we belonged to the old IDFA, the Athlone LFA and now Rygate,” Zeeman explained.
“There was an offer on the table from Baltic when the club was against the ropes and struggling. At that time we only had juniors, but no seniors. By the grace of God things changed and we never looked back since then,” Zeeman concluded.
