Maties’ Dessie ready to show he’s no ‘Duncan doughnut’ in battle of the Crowies

The battle of the Crowie brothers, Duncan (pictured left) and Desmond (pictured right), has got the tongues wagging once again  – but this time for more reasons than one reason.

Duncan’s Cape Town Spurs hosts Desmond’s Maties FC outfit in an ABC Motsepe League encounter (14:00) at Ikamva on Sunday.

Apart from the competitive rivalry between these two Cape legends of football, there is also a historic occasion, the Football 4 Humanity event taking place when a Western Cape XI play host to the Palestine National team at the Athlone Stadium at 17:00.

This initiative is spearheaded by Safa Cape Town and fully endorsed by the South African Football Association (Safa).

Both Duncan and Desmond had been approached to play a part in this initiative with the former identified as part of the technical team made up of Boebie Solomons and Farouk Abrahams while ‘Dessie’ was one of the scouts for the WC outfit.

Unfortunately, Safa Western Cape had other ideas and confirmed via a statement that the fixture between Spurs and Maties must go ahead, meaning that the Crowie brothers will not be part of the historic occasion at the Home of Soccer, but rather eyeballing each other on the touchline at Ikamva on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Maties FC is currently flexing its muscles in Stream B of the Second Division with a perfect record – five wins from five matches, leading the way and looking unstoppable.

The Maties have also bagged the Nedbank Regional title and are brimming with confidence.

Spurs, on the other hand, is sitting on 10 points from six matches and would want to close the gap on the Cape Winelands outfit – this will be easier said than done as the visitors have bolstered their squad considerably with experienced campaigners which could prove too much for Duncan’s young guns.

Needless to say, Desmond is also eyeing revenge for last season’s 1-2 defeat against older brother Duncan at the same venue. And judging by their performances thus far, he might be the sibling that could have the last laugh or bite!
