It has been just more than a week and the Mamelodi Sundowns player Buhle Majavu (pictured left) still cannot believe the impression that he and his twin brother, Okuhle, made at the annual Bayhill Premier Cup under 19 tournament in Cape Town.
Buhle was crowned the Player of the Tournament after some mesmerising performances for the young Brazilians. But not many people know that these brothers started their soccer careers at Hanover Park-based Diadora FC before being scouted by Africa’s top team.
Buhle’s three goals and five assists, along with two Player of the Match awards, were the major reasons for him being named the best player at the Easter spectacle in Belhar.
The youngster explained to No Bones with Jones: “I am very humbled and honoured to have been selected as the best player at such a big event. That said, football is a team sport and this award goes as much to my teammates as it goes to me individually.”
The twins started out with Young Bafana Academy in the Strand but became a more polished and refined product at Diadora under the watchful eyes of coach Mangaliso Ntombana,
The duo also assisted the Hanover Park-based club to win promotion to the Safa Cape Town’s Third Division last season as well as winning a third Coke Cup title in a row.
According to Shakes as Ntombana is known, Buhle’s versatility on attack makes him a must-have for any club.
“He is a winger, but Sundowns used him as a striker and in the second match the coach played him in an unfamiliar role, but as always, he never disappoints,” said Shakes.
“He created a lot of space for them because of his movement, you know. He is a mobile striker and caused a lot of problems for opponents,” Ntombana concluded.
