Oil and water do not mix and never will… well, maybe sometimes.
Especially in this instance where it’s admirable and understandable to see how Seaside Spurs are rallying behind Hollywoodbets Third Division champion Vasco da Gama to win promotion to the ABC Motsepe League. Why?
Because that way Ocean View, who finished 16th above the already relegated (Woodlands United (17th) and FC Hout Bay (18th), will get to retain their Third Division status for next season.
This means that there will definitely be an ‘Ocean View derby’ on the cards for next season – just like FC Hout Bay provided in recent seasons before the new kid on the block in the Two Oceans LFA, Seaside, came into existence.
Needless to say, the newcomer is stealing the thunder and headlines for its heroics on the field where the team ended in an impressive sixth position in its debut season.
They have really shown their more established coastal neighbours, FC Hout Bay and Ocean View, how to conduct business – on and off the field.
One particular individual who is ironically keeping fingers crossed for Ocean View to retain its status is rival coach from Seaside, Gerald Stober.
Stober, who emphatically dispatched both his rivals this season, sees the bigger picture and is fully aware of the risk of losing the infamous ‘Ocean View derby’ in the community.
The former Bafana Bafana striker, who hails from the area, stated this particular fixture is much needed and important for the coastal community.
“Having more than one team from the Two Oceans is a must so that we offer as many opportunities as possible for players to play at a higher level,” Stober explained to No Bones with Jones. “Here is some incredible talent. It is equally important for the people of the area as they are football-loving people with a good understanding of the game,” Stober concluded.
Stober pointed out that he is currently on a ‘break’ from football to recharge his batteries for next season which will surely come with bigger expectations given that they have outdone themselves and punched way above their weight.
“I’m already in the early stages of planning for next season,” Stober concluded.
