Dessie’s Maties FC eyeing spot in Nedbank last 32

Safa Western Cape has released the ABC Motsepe League’s much-anticipated Nedbank Cup preliminary fixtures to commence this weekend.

There were initial fears that the opening rounds would be postponed allowing for registrations to be completed. There is also a cloud hanging over the eligibility of Zizwe United’s participation and the province will confirm this in due time.

One of the standout matchups in round one is that of the coach Desmond Crowie’s (pictured) defending champion Maties FC who will travel to Ocean View to face the newcomer Seaside Spurs on Saturday.

Crowie stated the hunger and desire is there from his troops to go “much deeper” in the David vs Goliath competition.

“It would be pleasing if we can be part of the last 32 and compete with higher level teams,” said Crowie.

This will indeed be a baptism of fire for coach Gerlad Stober and his Seaside outfit as well as a measuring stick for Stober to gauge what he’ll be up against this season.

Similarly, another newcomer Crystal Palace will make their debut when they travel to Craig Roslee’s City Kings while the defending Motsepe League champion FN Rangers host Junction Rovers.

This particular fixture has in the past been one that has the tongues wagging for reasons other than football – hopefully that will not be the case again this season.
