Salt River Blackpool Ladies head coach Shannon Mills highlighted that they would try to make the most of their free entry into the Sasol League playoffs given by Safa Western Cape.
The Cape District Football Association-based club secured their playoff spot by virtue of not enough participation from other regions forcing the province to include teams from the lower regional leagues to make up the numbers.
With UCT Ladies winning promotion to the HollywoodBets Super League one spot has opened up. The province then decided that the teams who finished third in their respective streams will now play out to fill the vacant spot left by UCT Ladies.
Mills, who steered her side to the semi-final of the Coke Cup, explained to No Bones with Jones. “It’s obviously something that we haven’t really planned for, given that we were only informed of this recently and it’s certainly an interesting decision.
“However, now that we are one of three fortunate teams to have been given this opportunity, we are really looking forward to it and will do our best to take advantage of it and get ourselves into the Sasol League for 2025.
“We have a fairly young group of players, but they have great potential, and we believe that they can benefit from competing in a higher division alongside some strong sides,” Mills, who also secured promotion to the HollywoodBets Super League and a runner-up medal in the Coke Cup with UCT Ladies recently, added.
Blackpool Ladies has left already en route to the Helderstroom Prison where the playoffs are hosted. The opening match on Saturday will see Mbekweni CSC face Commodores FFC, following the Cape Town side’s encounter against Mbekweni CSC at 11:00. Two hours later they square up against Commodores FFC in their final match.
