All’s well that ends well – or is it?
And this is probably exactly the attitude that Wynberg St. Johns (WSJ) will adopt following their under-16 side’s “justified” promotion to Premier One of Cape Town Tygerberg LFA (CTLFA) – albeit with a technicality
This comes after Safa Cape Town ruled in favour of De Beers FC who lodged a complaint against WSJ’s rivals and log leaders at that time, Norway Parks for allegedly fielding a player that was not listed on the team sheet and subsequently came late as well.
Initially, De Beers resorted to their CTLFA and found no joy which prompted the Strand-based club to reach out to Safa Cape Town – who in turn ruled that Norway Parks should be penalised, ultimately losing out on the league title and promotion to WSJ by two points with De Beers in third position.
This decision had even greater repercussions.
Because the CTLFA’s junior league system works on a hybrid collective points system, Norway Parks’ entire junior section would have been playing in the top league in the coming season but have now dropped back to the “second league” with this honour going to Wynberg-St Johns.
Due to the sensitivity of the issue, WSJ’s Heiny Gerwel stated that they “declined to comment.”
Meanwhile De Beers’ secretary Anabela Rebelo forwarded the club’s response on the matter. “We have no comments as we are not Wynberg St. Johns, we suggest your rather speak to them directly,” Rebelo stated in an email to No Bones with Jones
One gets the impression that this is not the end of the matter. Watch this space!
