Maties FC head coach Desmond Crowie will be the first to admit that a single point from three matches should be a cause for concern.
But justifiably for Crowie, he has a good enough reason for this uncharacteristic start to the new campaign from the 2023 Western Cape Nedbank Cup champs – and that is the USSA Championship, which was a big priority for the Cape Winelands outfit, which was competing in the B-Section.
Unfortunately for Crowie, they were booted out in the semi-finals, which ended their quest to win promotion back to the A-section, where the UWC is competing.
This disappointment was difficult to digest; however, it’s not the be-all and end-all for Crowie and his troops.
According to Crowie, they need to dust themselves off and turn their attention to stream B of the ABC Motsepe League campaign where it is still all to play for,
“There’s still a lot at stake and we have to keep our chins up and roll up our sleeves,” the former Cape Town All Stars told No Bones with Jones. “We still have a big part of the season to rectify matters, and that will be our focus for now.”
“The players are well aware of the demands, so they need to back it up with some good performances, but more importantly, to collect some much-needed points,” he added.
Fortunately for Crowie and his troops, there are three teams, Nanini Na All Stars, Mbekweni Sundowns and Ubuntu Spartans, who all have not registered a point after their three matches thus far.
Hence, Crowie and his coaching staff expect they will break their duck for the season when they welcome Nanini Na to their Lentelus home ground this coming Friday.
“I think the players owe it to themselves and our fans,” the Maties mentor further added.
“We are not underestimating anyone, but we must take full advantage of our home ground,” Crowie concluded.
