Graveyard League lives up to its name – with shocking results

Safa Cape Town’s Third Division campaign for 2025/’26, now approaching the halfway mark, has definitely lived up to its billing!

And those who follow the Graveyard’ League, as it is called, will be able to testify it’s one of the most exciting leagues in the province, but also the most unpredictable, with games coming thick and fast – double headers and midweek games, it has it all – despite the fact it lost its sponsor that didn’t really mean anything anyways.

Luckily, no one is betting on this league as is the case with many other leagues around the world, as it would be a bookie’s paradise and betting would be a nightmare with crazy odds… just as recent results have shown with unfathomable upsets and surprises.

So, let’s start right at the top, where the log leader Saxon Rovers have dropped points against lower-ranked opposition for the second consecutive match. Last week they suffered their first loss of the season when they went down 0-1 to fifth-placed Greenwood Athletic.

One really expected coach Robert Pretorius’ troops to bounce back against the relegation-threatened Goal50 United, but they didn’t.

In fact, they were held to a 1-1 draw at their Royal Road home ground in Maitland on Saturday, which just underlines how unpredictable and unforgiving this league really is. Another result that raised eyebrows was Matroosfontein FC’s 3-2 win over Lionel Miller’s Greenwood Athletic.

I mean, just last week Greenwood condemned Saxons to their first defeat of the season, and now they get given a taste of their own medicine by the struggling Matroos, who are placed in the bottom half of the table.

Two weeks ago the league’s punching bags, Good Hope FC, held Cape Town City to a 2-2 draw, and followed it up by drawing with Silver Spurs as well. Good Hope has in fact pulled off another huge upset when they held Premier United to a 3-3 draw at the Downberg Road Sports Complex on Sunday.

Who saw that coming? This underlines just how unpredictable this league really is. That’s why coaches will preach to their players that if you don’t pitch up on the day and respect your opponent, irrespective of their position on the log, then you must suffer the consequences – it’s as simple as that.

Weekend’s results

Premier United 3, Good Hope FC 3
