Safa Cape Town’s Third Division campaign is back – with a bang – after a break for the holy day of Eid-ul Fitr – and boy are we in for a treat (pardon the pun!).
Football lovers are advised to plan wisely as there are a few mouthwatering ties on the cards, starting on Friday, 27 March, when Roger Fortune’s debutants and fourth-placed, Young Pirates FC, welcome Greenwood Athletic, who sit one position lower, to the ‘Harry Gwala’ in Heideveld.
Pirates have been not too shabby and built up some good momentum and are also unbeaten in their previous four matches, while Greenwood themselves have found their mojo once again with three victories on the trot – the last being a morale-boosting 3-1 away win to Rygersdal FC.
With this in mind, fans can expect a proper footballing encounter between two well-structured teams with equally good coaches should they make the trip to Heideveld.
Another cracker on the cards is that of coach Andy Herman’s young Cape Town Spurs troops, who will host Ashraf Calvert’s (coach) impressive Rygersdal FC at Ikamva on Saturday afternoon.
Spurs have been blowing hot and cold, which is why they are considerably off the pacesetter and positioned lower down (8th) the pecking order on the log.
Needless to say, it’s understandable as they possess one of the youngest squads who are still getting accustomed to the so-called ‘Graveyard’ league.
Rygers on the other hand will be looking to get back to winning ways after they have been humbled by Greenwood at the Meadows which perhaps came as a surprise – or not!
There’s also another humdinger taking place in the Northern Suburbs where the history, rivalry and ‘hatred’ runs deep albeit just for 90 minutes – the Northerns derby between Trinitarians and neighbours Matroosfontein FC.
The latter will make the short trip to the Uitsig Sports Complex to see if they can do a “smash and grab,” but that will be easier said than done.
Despite both sides being out of the running for the league, one can expect that these two old foes will be going at each other hammer and tongs and no love will be lost.
Bragging rights will be the main objective and it will be interesting to see who will rule the roost amongst the blue of Trinnies and the red of Matroos come Saturday.
