There’s an old adage, if you’re good, you’re good – period!
And that is exactly what the legendary Boebie Solomons has yet again proved – even after decades of coaching, success just comes naturally for the Safa Cape Town Technical Director.
Solomons achieved in 15 weeks what his predecessors couldn’t muster in a quarter of century – and that is the sweet taste of success after he guided Camps Bay FC’s u16’s to victory in the FN Rangers’ u.16 youth event held at the Royal Road Sport Complex over the weekend.
This was no mean feat as the standard was high and quality of competition was fierce as one has come to expect from teams affiliated to the Cape Town Tygerberg league. Camps Bay beat Norway Park by 2-0 in the final to lift their maiden trophy.
It could have been a clean sweep for the Atlantic Seaboard based side after they also scooped up the Team of the Tournament, Coach of the Tournament (females), Goalkeeper of the Tournament for both the boys and girls section, as well as the Highest goalscorer award for girls.
Unfortunately for Camps Bay, their girls’ side lost out by 0-2 to Ubuntu Academy in their final which was the only blemish on their scorecard at their very first attempt at this tournament – that said nothing could take away from the fact that Solomons and his coaching team left an indelible mark at the tournament as newcomers.
This achievement certainly vindicates the decision of the club’s chairman, Marcel Golding, who wanted a complete paradigm shift hence he roped in the experienced and well-travelled Solomons. Golding
Solomons explained to No Bones with Jones. “First of all, I want to thank our chairman for the trust and belief he placed in me to take up this challenge. Then, to the players and the coaches who responded like true pro’s, you know. As much I want to take credit, they still had to buy into the philosophy and they did just that.
“So, hopefully this is only the beginning for bigger things to come. But remember, success should not only be measured by how many trophies you display in your cabinet, but also the development and holistic growth of every player walking through our gates.
“We are mindful that few will reach the pinnacle, but as long as we create exemplary citizens that can contribute toward nation building, then I say that is good enough as well,” Solomons concluded.
