Santos FC head coach Jayrod Visagie (pictured) says that he is not concerned about the fact that his striker Ameen Awaldien is firing blanks at the moment, adding that his purple patch will eventually turn to gold.
It is fair to say that Awaldien, a former goal machine in the Hollywoodbets Third Division, has unexpectedly been struggling to get to grips with soccer in the second division – but this is largely due to limited game time – especially at his former Hanover Park FC where he was benched more most times and this forced him to make the switch to Santos to increase his (playing) prospects.
Visagie mainatains that despite Awaldien’s goal drought, he still adds value to the squad as he has many other attributes that make him an asset for any team.
“Ameen has been very good in my opinion,” Visagie told No Bones with Jones. “He might not be scoring but he creates assists. He is also a great presence in the dressing room.
“So, his all-round contribution is very positive and it’s good for the morale of the team. He is a great sportsman and a great person and always makes an impact in any match he plays,” said Visagie.
Santos welcomes back former players like Stanton Weir and Shiraaj Davids who returned from Hanover Park FC after the switch a couple of months ago.
Needless to say, this will spice things up even further when they host Hanover Park FC, aka ‘Die Brasse vannie Park’ whom they have beaten twice this season already – during a Nedbank Cup fixture as well as a first round clash in the league – on Saturday (16:00) in Thornton.
“But that counts for nothing, it’s about consistency and being able to reset and do it all over again,” Visagie warned. “But they’re an incredible side, it will be about who wants it the most at the end of the day,” he concluded.
