FC Kapstadt has laid down a marker regarding the ongoing war between Palestine and Israel.
The Cape Town Tygerberg LFA-based club has demonstrated its support and solidarity for the Palestinian cause with a new special black kit for their Under-19’s.
The club has released a statement recently whereby it called on all football clubs and the sporting fraternity across the globe to rise and voice its support for an end to the genocide, ethnic cleansing and for a Free Palestine.
“As an institution, FC Kapstadt will not be silent on matters of injustice and human rights,” said the club’s president Zaid Omar.
“The club has a long history against racism, colonialism and injustice. Hence, our Under-19 team will adopt a special black kit to demonstrate our solidarity with Palestine.”
Omar added that they will continue with their belief of the late President, Nelson Mandela that “Sport has the Power to change the world.”
Mandela’s words at International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People in Pretoria on 4 December 1997 were: “We know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians.”
Omar echoed Mandela’s sentiments by further saying: “FC Kapstadt is an institution committed to youth development and constantly striving for excellence through sport.
“More importantly, the Football Club has always been a vehicle for social cohesion and social justice,” Omar concluded.
