First Division beckons for the high-flying Sea Point Swifts (Hope FC)

Sea Point Swits (Hope FC) is on the cusp of an historic achievement at Safa Western Cape’s ABC Motsepe League Playoffs for the National First Division.

The Second Division debutant has progressed to the semi-finals against NC Professionals of the Northern Cape (15:30) on Saturday – and should Swifts win this match, they will secure promotion to the professional ranks of South African football for the first time in the club’s 106-year history.

Swifts enjoyed a well-deserved rest day on Friday and got their heads ready after a convincing 3-1 win over Ravens United in their opening match, followed by a 1-1 draw against Mangaung United in their second match on Thursday. These results ensured their place in the last four as they are flying the flag for the Western Cape, as well as keeping their hopes for promotion alive.

Needless to say, Swifts are looking good value for money with professional performances and looking solid collectively. And with senior players like the captain, Craig Martin, leading from the front with his leadership qualities and goal scoring prowess, not to mention some stellar displays from youngsters like Edmilsin “Mielies” Chaney, as well as goalkeeper Leathan Croats in the last line of defence, puts the newbies in good stead to achieve the unthinkable.

One can only hope that the Western Cape champion does not get curtailed by dodgy decisions from the officials on Saturday as this has been one of the main factors preventing teams from the province to win promotion to the pro ranks in the past – and can stop Swifts from reaching the promised land.

As things stand, the team from Bonteheuwel, with its more than a century-old history, look like they will surpass their feat they achieved in Nelspruit back in 2001 under the guidance of William ‘Pele’ Anderson.

This also bodes well for Swifts as it could certainly start a resurgence of note to turn around the club’s fortunes and put it back on the map where it belongs.
