Goals Galore Marks Thrilling Opening Weekend in SAFA Cape Town Third Division

There was no shortage of goals, drama and eye-catching performances across the opening weekend of the SAFA Cape Town Third Division as teams wasted little time in laying down early markers.

A remarkable 26 goals were scored across eight matches, with not a single draw recorded.

The pick of the bunch was Mason October’s D6 Mitchells Plain debutants, who produced the performance of the weekend with a commanding 5-2 demolition of CR Vasco da Gama at Khayelitsha Stadium.

Over at the Solo Street AstroTurf, Greenwood Athletic edged Silver Spurs AFC 3-2 in a five-goal thriller, ensuring former Spurs coach Goodwin Lewis had the last laugh against his old club.

Another newcomer, Everton FC, matched that scoreline against Trinitarians FC in Heideveld to hand coach Gwappi Esau a well-deserved three points, while neighbours Young Pirates followed suit with an impressive 3-2 away victory over Ashford Athletic.

Langa-based Wanderers FC also got off to a perfect start with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Cape Town Spurs at Ikamva, while Curtley Daniels’ Rygersdal FC ground out a narrow but valuable 1-0 win away to JL Zwane in Gugulethu.

Elsewhere, Jomos Power cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over fellow debutants Rising Stars FC, while Premier United underlined their ambitions with an emphatic 4-1 triumph over Junction Rovers, inspired by a hat-trick from Michael Petersen.

The opening weekend action is not yet complete, with Cape Town City set to host Wynberg St Johns in Sunday’s lone fixture at Malta Park. Kick-off is scheduled for 13:00.
