Safa Cape Town’s most revered and coveted cup competition, the Coke Cup, has once again lived up to expectations.
The 26th edition of the David vs Goliath competition was characterised by upsets during the Round of 16 held at the Rooikrans Sports Complex on Sunday.
The biggest upset was that of a former champion in Hanover Park FC who was sent packing by a spirited Tafelzucht FC. The latter had to come back from a goal down to beat the former double champion by 2-1 – thanks to a peach of a freekick by Yaasien Hartley while Keano Josias netted the winner.
If you thought this fixture had fans on the edge then the match-up between Young Pirates and Montague Spurs delivered an exciting nine-goal thriller with Pirates running out eventual winners by 6-3 after being tied at 3-3 in the second half.
The Bonteheuwel-based duo of Goulburn Athletic and Bluegum United (pictured) kept the flag flying for the Bontas with 2-0 and 3-1 wins against FC Salvo and Bishop Lavis FC respectively. Bluegum will be driven by the legacy of their late chairman Ricardo Rass who passed on in April this year.
Meanwhile, it was business as usual for the defending ladies champion Dangerous Heroes following their narrow 1-0 win over the mighty Cape Town Roses.
Judging by the performances of Heroes and last season’s runner-up Magic Ladies, a repeat could be on the cards again this season – especially after the Magic annihilated Rygate Ladies by 9-0.
UCT Ladies also progressed to the last eight, albeit a very unconvincing 1-0 win over Heideveld Female Football Academy.
In the under-18 boys’ section Valhalla United, Bayview FC, FC Kapstadt, Rebels Lingelethu, Hanover Park FC, Khayelitsha United Lingelethu, Everton Nyanga and Antalyaspor JPM all advance to the quarterfinals.
