Ameen Awaldien 1, Darron Omaticus 0 – for now!
This rivalry between two of the deadliest strikers in the Mother City, is set to continue following their respective step-up to the ABC Motsepe League Second Division.
Awaldien, who recently joined Hanover Park from Silver Spurs and Omaticus, who made the move from Jamestown United to FN Rangers earlier, have been going toe-to-toe for the past couple of seasons in the Third Division when they battled it out for the Golden Boot for their respective clubs.
Both strikers have already reached the 30-goal mark for a season in the past, but Omaticus has the edge as he won the top-striker award on both occasions in the Third Division, while Awaldien could just watch from the sidelines.
While Awaldien broke his duck in his second game for the Brasse Vannie Park during a 6-0 drubbing of Ukhanya United last week, Billy, as Omaticus is known, is still stuck in first gear.
It is no secret that these two will subtly be keeping a keen eye on each other’s goal scoring tally this season as both are subliminally chasing the top marksmen accolade.
But with fewer games as opposed to the Third Division where 36 games are played, they will have to double their efforts. Ironically both Awaldien and Omaticus have already set their goal tally at no less than 10 for the season (16 games).
These old ‘foes’ go head-to-head when Hanover Park welcomes Rangers to Downberg Road on Saturday for what is expected to be a mouth-watering affair. It will also be interesting to see who will have the greater impact and influence on attack.
Needless to say, both teams are still undefeated with Rangers having played a game less after their bye in the opening round of the campaign.
