It was a historic first for Portland High School as they became the first team to successfully defend their Gavin Manuel Schools Legacy crown, securing a record third title and further cementing their status as the tournament’s most successful school.
Portland first etched their name onto the trophy when they captured the 2018 title, becoming only the third school to win the prestigious competition. However, a six-year wait followed before they reclaimed the crown in 2025.
They then went one step further in 2026 by successfully defending their title at the tournament’s new home at Chukker Road in Kenwyn, another first in the event’s history.
In the Boys Under-16 final, Portland overcame a determined Bergvliet High School side 2-1 to ensure the trophy remains in Mitchells Plain for another year. Oval North finished third, while Wynberg High emerged as winners of the Plate Section.
Meanwhile, Rocklands High celebrated a breakthrough moment in the Girls Under-16 division by claiming their maiden Gavin Manuel Schools Legacy title. They defeated Glendale High 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the sides were deadlocked at 1-1 at the end of regulation time.
Bergvliet High’s girls secured the bronze medal position, while Oval North added to their strong showing by winning the Girls Plate Section.
The Top Goalkeeper awards were sponsored by Goalline Pty Ltd, sportswear company owned by Mark Kapman and Kamaal Sait. The shot stoppers each won a set trophy, and full goalkeeper kit including a set of gloves and playing gear.
It’s really amazing to see how popular this event has become with household names like Arreshaat Daniels and Christopher Isaacs also linked to the event – and all this with very little support and backing.
It’s operating on full cylinders due the desire and commitment from a handful of passionate sports loving individuals, educators, administrators.
“The backbone of the tournament since its inception in 2016 comprises Nigel Crowie, Isaac Arendse, Sean Campbell and a small on-day administration who had been working systematically through all the paperwork in the offices of the Victoria Cricket Club at no cost.
“This reminded one of the work done at the WPSSSU headquarters in Amelia House, Athlone. Efficiency at work,” writes Clement Du Plessis.
