SAFA CT gets serious and places CDFA under administration

Safa Cape Town is not playing games with the Cape District Football Association (CDFA) anymore and has placed the Wynberg-based Local Football Association (LFA) under administration.

This decision was taken by a majority vote at a meeting by the governing body held at the Sports Science Institute in Newlands on Sunday (3 March).

It will now be interesting to see who the organisation will appoint as an administrator of the sinking CDFA ship.

No Bones with Jones has been informed that only the Cape Town Tygerberg LFA objected to this motion carrying through. The source also mentioned that there was one LFA that asked for CDFA’s Wayne Jones and Ivan Williams to be indefinitely suspended by the mother body.

“Football will still be played under the region’s jurisdiction until the CDFA opts to play open cards and submit to the rules of the region,” a source within Safa Cape Town told our website.

“It was inevitable that things would pan out this way as CDFA has been arrogant and cocky and showed no respect to the Mother Body and its president, Mr. Bennett Bailey,” the source added.

CDFA and Safa CT have been at loggerheads for some time now since the CDFA delegation disrupted the Annual General Meeting in 2023.

The DC found CDFA’s then president, Mr. Wayne Jones and the delegate Mr. Ivan Williams guilty of disrupting the meeting and they were placed under suspension and not allowed to partake in any footballing matters at the District.

CDFA still went ahead and held an AGM where Mr. Jones featured prominently and he was once again elected as president with a new secretary in Nathan Less.

Safa CT sent correspondence to clubs a couple of weeks back confirming that the Annual General Meeting held was a violation of the SAFA Cape Town directive dated 10 February 2023 and the SAFA Cape Town Electoral Code: Article 1b, Article 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, 3e, 3f and 3g.

“At the Disciplinary Hearing held on 19 October 2023, Mr Wayne Jones and Mr Ivan Williams were found guilty of various charges. Mr Jones admitted to constituting the illegally held AGM  where he was re-elected as president,” the statement read.

Subsequent arrangements noted is that the CDFA should be liable for 50 percent of the expenses incurred and 40 percent of the legal fees.

CDFA has in the past shown that they did not always follow directives handed down by Safa CT – and it can be expected that this decision will also meet fierce resistance from the Wynberg-based football body.

However, with the LFA facing possible expulsion, if they do not conform, there will undoubtedly be pressure on the clubs to follow Safa Cape Town’s instructions.

A few clubs have already shown that they are fed up with the way things are done at the CDFA and have spoken up against the District’s leadership.

Two years ago one of the biggest clubs in the District, Stephanian Ottery broke ties with CDFA and joined up with Cape Town Tygerberg – and at the end of last year, Garlandale FC also left the Wynberg-based outfit and will be playing its soccer under the CTTLFA banner this season.

One of the oldest clubs, Spenston AFC also recently voiced their concern and considered its options of breaking away due to the manner in which the LFA was conducting its business.

It is not completely known whether these clubs left because of the constant bickering between the CDFA and Safa CT – but it can be said with conviction that they did leave to improve their chances of playing competitive football without any interruptions.
