Matroosfontein FC goal poacher Tauric Gamildien has opted to turn out for Stellenbosch FC rather than the Safa Cape Town Academy in the upcoming Bayhill Premier Cup – as it just makes more sense.
The 18-year-old striker was training with the region’s academy for a couple of weeks and set to wear the captain’s armband before Stellies came knocking.
In all fairness, Gamildien has been linked with Stellies before and it is no surprise that this move finally materialized.
In fact, it is a win-win situation for both parties as the young striker will now be in a position to further his academic career as well.
Gamildien, who made his first appearance at the Bayhill for Matroos last year, only managed to score one goal during the entire tournament which is way below par for a player of his standard.
The striker, who had scored 24 goals for Matroos’ Third Division side since he broke through the senior ranks last season, says it’s a real honour to be part of the Stellies family.
“I’ve always loved the club and to finally be a part of it, is fantastic. I truly love it here,” Gamildien told No Bones with Jones. “I’ll be trying to be the top goal scorer with my new club this year.”
Gamildien is confident that he has the perfect platform to take his career to the next level. “My options are Sports Science and Law right now,” he further added.
Meanwhile, Stellies’ head coach Jean-Pierre Farrugia acknowledged that Gamildien is a “nice alternate addition.”
Ferugia, who guided his side to the Engen Knockout Challenge last season, is keeping his cards close to his chest in search of an elusive Bayhill Premier Cup title.
Stellies has come close in the past to winning a maiden Bayhill Cup title but was bundled out in the semi-final and Farrugia. knows all too well about pressure.
“We’ll do the best we can and remain hopeful like most other teams,” the Stellies coach diplomatically concluded.
