Just as they did during the dark days of apartheid breaking down barriers with their football talent, the Western Cape Federation Legends are still resolute in ensuring that they can add value and make a meaningful contribution to football and society at large.
The only difference is that these days it is predominantly done off the field and in an administrative and officiating capacity.
Their vision and mission was highlighted when these stars of yesteryear rolled out their plans for 2024 during their year-end function at the Heideveld Primary School on Sunday.
Top on their priority list is to form a Federation Legends committee nationally. The go-to man Haroon Mohamed has been instrumental in facilitating this initiative.
“An interim committee has been established and a draft constitution has been developed,” Mohamed explained to No Bones with Jones. “So, we are looking at the launch next year in Durban.”
Under the leadership of Mohamed and other stalwarts, such as Stevie Williams, Donnie Ronnie and others these golden oldies ensure that they play an active role within the football structures of Safa Cape Town.
Mohamed admitted it was a busy but “fruitful” year where many of their objectives were met.
“We completed about seven or eight activities with the main one being the partnership with Safa,” Mohamed further stated.
“We are the only Fed region who got the commission from Safa at a local level. We participated in the u.13 Build-it Schools Festival and two five-a-side tournaments where we did the officiating. There was also the legend’s function not too long ago. This is also how we keep in touch and the camaraderie intact. There is also our monthly radio show with Radio 786 where we invite the former pros to interact with them – we have completed 11 shows this year.
“We also participated in the Safa CT selections for their youth squads, as well as the Sacos commemoration events, and did some welfare work for some of our members in need. So, we were quite active and all of these initiatives are going to continue next year,” Mohamed concluded.
