Focus in ‘Goalgate’ scandal turns to the officials

With the four teams implicated in Safa Cape Town’s Third Division ‘Goalgate’ scandal already questioned, the focus now shifts to the referees.

Diadora FC, West Coast City, Two for Joy and Electric City all had their day in ‘court’ to please explain their versions of what transpired at the playoffs two weeks ago at the William Herbert Sports Complex following the abnormal scorelines where altogether 58 goals were scored in two separate (group) matches.

No Bones with Jones can confirm that Gabriel de Bruin, Head of Referees at the Mitchell Plain LFA, is also now asked to appear on Tuesday (14 November) – a day before the due date of the inquiry led by Safa CT’s deputy president Andrew Bothman and the legal expert Sean Lea who is chief investigator in the inquiry.

This despite the fact that De Bruin was not doing duty at the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Lea’s been tasked to make a recommendation to the region which will also still have to meet with its REC and Manco members on Tuesday.

It will be interesting to see if the investigating team will request an extension on the matter as the case is very complex and may require more time than initially anticipated.
