Sometimes the grass is not greener on the other side – no disrespect to anyone.
Take Hanover Park FC’s Ameen Awaldien (pictured with ball) for instance… a prolific striker for Silver Spurs for six consecutive seasons in the Third Division, in fact, he was their top goal scorer during that time.
Awaldien’s much anticipated move to Hanover Park FC, who plays a level higher in the ABC Motsepe League, is however not going according to plan – for whatever reasons.
Obviously, limited game time due to the many star players is one contributing factor and the reason why ‘Zlatan’ or the ‘Lion’ as he is called, seldom roared and soared with only one goal to his name for his new club so far this season.
Alwaldien hinted that he felt obligated as the Brasse Vannie Park had been knocking at his door for quite some time, hence he honoured what was expected despite being linked to the newcomer Junction Rovers as well.
When Awaldien was asked to give an assessment of the difference between the two leagues, he said: “Well, I never played much, but it’s nogal not that exciting like when people would say you must play it a level up,” Awaldien told No bones with Jones.
“Slow-paced football and not much excitement as people put it out to be… well in my own opinion at least. In my opinion the other stream (A) seems much more exciting as in our stream FN Rangers is the dominant team. Rangers are very good and have a lot of young talent, but also have many experienced players,” he added.
Given that the Motsepe League did not live up to Awaldien’s expectations one should not be surprised if he returned to the Third Division, dubbed the ‘graveyard’ league due to its unpredictability and cut -throat nature – presumably with his beloved Spurs.
The 28-year old striker has vehemently dismissed claims that he is not really missed and the fact that Rushan Abrahams is stealing his thunder.
Awaldien said: “No, he’s stealing nothing… I’ve done it for six years straight… if they gave out an award for top goal scorer at the club, I would probably be the one that got it the most.
“Besides, the graveyard misses me … I can hear it as I go to watch games and the comments would be “you must come back “Spurs need you. But hey, let’s see what is there as the season starts at the end of the year but I’m not one to plan and God’s plans are better, so we’ll cross the bridge when we get there,” Awaldien concluded.
