In any venture, there is no better way than starting from the bottom – humble beginnings as they say.
And the new kid on the block in the amateur football circles, Galaxy Spurs is a typical example thereof.
After close to two decades of rebel football, the team from Rocklands is finally ready to swim with the big fish of Mitchells Plain following their acceptance at the Mitchells Football Association (MPLFA) under the leadership of Gilbert Kruger.
Galaxy’s chairman, Wayne Stevens, acknowledged that it has been a long time coming to get to this point.
“The club always wanted to go bigger and form part of a structured organisation, but faced a lot of challenges in the past,” Stevens explained to No Bones with Jones.
“Therefore we rather focussed on getting the necessary structures in place so that we can be ready and prepared to go the LFA route – and here we are,” said a chuffed Stevens.
Galaxy has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to recruit players from Rocklands, Portlands, Tafelsig and Eastridge for their respective under-12, -14, -16, -18, 1st Team, Super League and over-40 divisions.
The Rocklands-based club also made its much-anticipated debut at its new home at the MPLFA last weekend and according to Steven he was “pretty satisfied with proceedings overall.”
“We managed to fulfill all our fixtures as per division. Our results were not the best but we were still waiting on a number of player cards from SAFA CT – but it went well,” Stevens further explains.
“Look, we knew there would be small hiccups in the first couple of months but the response and attendance was great,” he added.
Unfortunately, it was a baptism of fire for the newbies but Stevens said that is the least of his concerns for now.
“Honestly speaking it was a bit of an eye-opener for the club but for the first month, we expected this as we are currently struggling with a training facility and the respective managers have not had the boys for training. But, like I said, we expected that but we will learn and grow.”
Galaxy was founded in 2008 by a bunch of guys in Rocklands and the club is now slowly realising its dream.
Steven emphasized it is now important to build on this achievement.
“The objective is to get as many youth on the playing field and make a positive change within their lives and also encourage enjoyment and competitiveness,” he further stated.
“The club’s mission and aim is for kids to be playing regularly with also a competitive edge from the seniors to juniors and we need to start building for better things to come in the future,” to something better and stronger in season two.
