Things in Heideveld – from a football perspective – does not look good at all, with the exception of Young Pirates FC of course who’s currently the only shining light and leading the way!
For instance, the area’s most senior outfit, Junction Rovers is staring down the barrel of the gun and is fighting tooth and nail in their stream (A) to try and save their ABC Motsepe League status. So, too, is Goal50 United sweating to retain their Third Division status for next season.
The reality is that the fate of both teams looks bleak and there is nothing reassuring that indicates that both Heideveld-based outfits will pull through.
That being said, these two teams cannot afford to lose their respective statuses as it is much needed for the players from the community especially given the role it plays in the area – hence, efforts must be doubled!
Besides this has now become a norm especially for Goal50 to try and rescue their status towards the business end of the season.
However, Goal50’s 39-year-old head coach Daryn Crowie’s calm and confident demeanour has even seasoned journalists ‘convinced’ that his side will escape relegation despite the odds heavily stacked against them this season.
Crowie, eldest son of the legendary former SA footballer Duncan, is very level-headed and mature for a rookie coach. He suggested that there’s no cause for panic at this stage as there is still a long way to go.
“A few interesting weeks ahead where we play teams around us…so this log can change quickly,” Crowie stated to No Bones with Jones. “There is still a long way to go,” he added.
Some would say that Crowie and his troops squandered a glorious opportunity during a 3-3 home draw against the wooden spooners Good Hope FC last week at the ‘Harry Gwala.’ while others would view a point as better than nothing.
Whichever way, what is certain is that their fight for survival will not get easier. Next up (Sunday 22 March) they welcome Trinitarians FC to Heideveld and one feels that this is a must win game if they are to pull off a Houdini-act as in previous seasons.
