Patience is a virtue…
And for someone so young, to show such maturity, grit and determination – one just has to admire the spirit of 16-year-old Holly Gerber (pictured left).
This under 17 goalkeeper of the Magic Ladies has epitomised this trait for some time now, finally culminating in a call-up to the South African national under17 side.
Needless to say that this achievement is long overdue and well-deserved as the former Hellenic product has been knocking on the door for quite some time.
She was also a victim of a freak incident during the Engen KO Challenge last season when gusty winds blew over the soccer poles injuring her foot in the process which set her back even further.
Perhaps it wasn’t her time then but rather now for her big break after selectors viewed some footage of the shotstopper who helped her side attain success in the Stanturf United Cup recently.
Gerber emphasized that she knows all too well that it is every young female footballer’s dream to represent their country – at any level.
Hence, Gerber revealed that she is ecstatic and will wear the green and gold of South Africa with immense pride following her call-up to the SA U17 WNT training camp & COSAFA U17 Girls Championship in Johannesburg.
“It’s something every kid dreams about at some point in their life, and I’m honoured that I am one of the chosen few that gets to do it,” Gerber told No Bones with Jones.
“I have to give all glory to God; I wouldn’t have this opportunity without Him guiding me. I’m looking forward to this new challenge, and will do the best I can,” she added.
Gerber, along with Nishaat Levy (pictured right) from Salt River Blackpool Ladies are the only two players from Cape Town drafted into the national squad.
