Young Pirates FC head coach Roger Fortune says the character and belief shown by his players in their debut season in Safa Cape Town’s Third Division is what excites him thus far.
And whether this is just a friendly reminder to his rivals, Fortune stated the following. “We are only starting to gel now with the new players that have strengthened the squad,” Fortune pointed out to No Bones with Jones.
“Let’s just say there’s more football to come. However, the character and beliefs the players are showing make me proud as a coach. But we won’t get ahead of ourselves, you know, as it’s a marathon and there are still many games left.”
Pirates (12 points) have managed four victories from six matches to keep in the hunt and within four points of the log leader, Saxon Rovers.
Their impressive statement win over Greenwood Athletic over the weekend has shown they are not to be underestimated or taken lightly – home or away.
Needless to say, Fortune expects to end the year on a high when they square up with fellow Heideveld rivals Goal50 United in the final match for 2025 before the league goes into recess for the Festive break.
Goal50 United, under the guidance of Daryn Crowie, has had a contrasting fortune compared to Pirates, with one win from six matches and already a minus-10 goal difference.
Fortune believes they are better than what the results currently reflect.
“We know their potential and what they are capable of on the day,” the Pirates mentor further added. “So, we will give them the respect they deserve, but our players know this is another opportunity for three points and to keep up with the pacesetters,” Fortune concluded.
