Cape Town football legend Neven Payne (pictured) says he hopes with all his heart that Cape Town Spurs retain their respective Motsepe Championship First Division and ABC Motsepe Second Division statuses as it would be a “catastrophic disaster” if they don’t.
According to Payne, both Spurs’ senior team – who is currently occupying the 14th position on the log – and its second division side (second last in stream A) – are battling relegation already.
“I won’t lie, I am watching the logs closely and I must say that I am worried,” Payne told No Bones with Jones. “I mean just because we were rivals back then doesn’t mean that I wish them ill.
“No! I am one of the individuals who genuinely want Spurs to succeed as they play an important role as an academy in Cape Town. Yes, we know it is not the same as when they had the backing of Ajax but they still serve as a platform for our talent from Cape Town,” he added.
The 60-year-old Hellenic stalwart says he knows all too well the “tough times” Spurs are facing as he experienced something similar with the Greek Gods back during his coaching days.
“I was in that zone when we faced relegation twice and we survived,” Payne, a former third division and Diski coach with CT City, pointed out.
“It was a really tough time, you know. People were facing uncertainty over their jobs and contracts and there is a lot at stake. I mean they should know, because they have been there before.
“But, hey, we should rally behind them and give them our support so that they can retain their statuses. We were also lucky back then but you need to want it badly as well.,” Payne concluded.
