New Girl’s section for Gavin Manuel Memorial Schools Legacy Cup

Sean Campbell, tournament director of the Gavin Manuel Memorial Legacy Schools Cup, needs to be commended for his appetite to ensure gender equality and balance at this annual school tournament is maintained.

This comes after the introduction of an under-18 girls’ section due to the popularity and demand that has been generated over in the previous six years.

Julleen Goliath, a former educator and administrator in school sports, has been roped in to help due to her vast knowledge and experience in school sports to help select the eight debutants for the 2023 edition.

Manyano High, Harry Gwala High, Rocklands High, Cedar High, Pelican Park High, Zeekoevlei High, Grassdale High and Muizenberg High have now been selected by the self-proclaimed “Your Majesty” herself in Goliath.

Campbell pointed out that this addition to the tournament was done to ensure that the event is inclusive to all and to add another dimension to the ever-growing school’s tournament.

“I think it is also our way of assisting and contributing with developing the girl’s game at school level,” said Campbell.
“The aim is to gradually increase the numbers and to bring it on par with the (under 16) boys’ section.

“The prizes for both section’s winners are exactly the same – a winning trophy and a kit,” Campbell added.
The boy’s section, consisting of 16 high schools, will be led by last year’s champion Windsor High, under the leadership of Grant Knipe.

The other participating schools are Thembalihle, Nkazimlo, Ocean View, Wynberg High, Muizenberg, Zeekoevlei, Steenberg, Aloe, Beacon Hill, Oval North, Spine Road, Mondale, Rocklands, Westridge and AZ Berman.
