Knowing how ‘trigger-happy’ the Silver Spurs hierarchy has been at times, one can deduce that their head coach, Goodwin Lewis (pictured), is operating on borrowed time.
This follows a third heavy defeat in so many games for Lewis after his side went down 1-5 to the newcomer Young Pirates during a Safa Cape Town Third Division match at the Heideveld Sports Complex on Friday.
Spurs have now conceded 12 goals in three matches, scoring only three – after they lost their opening match 1-3 against another newbie, Rygersdal FC, as well as a 1-4 drubbing against Cape Town City FC last week at the Hickory Road Sport Complex.
These are scary stats from a Spurs perspective and as cruel as it sounds, Lewis shouldn’t be surprised if he becomes the first casualty of the season.
It will be interesting to see when the patience of the Spurs’ chairman Enver Zeeman, and the Tajoodien-brothers, Victor and Abdul, runs out – will it be before Spurs’ next home fixture against Wanderers FC on Tuesday – or thereafter?
One also gets the feeling that if Oenie, as Lewis is known, does not pick up (maximum) points against the Langa-based team on Tuesday, it will definitely be the end of the road for this well-travelled and experienced wily old fox.
Spurs, like Goal50 United, who have played a game less – are currently the only two sides yet to register a point in the ‘Graveyard’ League. This is also Spurs’ worst start to a campaign.
In Lewis’ defence, he’s been in this position before with Crystal Palace and always managed to pull a rabbit out of the hat. But it appears that this time he has bitten off more than he can chew and could not be so lucky.
Friday results
