Pequeno drops bomb ahead of Vasco’s ‘biggest test’

With only three matches played in the Hollywoodbets Third Division campaign, Vasco da Gama coach Andrew Pequeno has dropped an early bomb.

Pequeno conceded that facing Silver Spurs (19:30) at the Johnson Road Sport Field on Friday evening will be their biggest test of the season.

Vasco is flying out of the blocks and setting the pace with three wins from their opening three matches against Crystal Palace, Woodlands United (both 1-0), as well as a 2-1 victory over Camps Bay FC on Monday evening at Parow Park.

Despite this perfect start compared to Spurs’ one win and one draw from their two matches, Pequeno revealed that he chopped and changed his starting XI for all three matches to give everyone a run as he is still searching for his set starting line-up.

This could also be one of the reasons why the Vasco mentor, who won this league with Hanover Park FC a couple of seasons ago, hinted that Spurs will be a tough nut to crack at the Hickory Road home ground.

“It will be our biggest test on Friday I reckon to see where we are,” Pequeno conceded. “The field also doesn’t suit playing football and we like to play football – but we also need to adapt, you know.
“The nice thing about this league is that every game is different and this is what makes this league exciting.

“People dismiss the fact that, uh, it’s not a nice and quality division but if you look across at how teams have strengthened a lot hey…I mean I played Woodlands on Friday and compared to what they had last season they are a lot better now.

“If you look at them (Woodlands) and teams like Matroosfontein, as well as Greenwood, they have a lot of good youngsters. If I look at it then I sometimes think this Bafana (Bafana) coach needs to get his head out of his arse and come down to Cape Town and come see what is here. There are some fantastic youngsters (playing) here,” the former Hanover Park mentor concluded.
