A weekend packed with goals, drama and significant results saw Grassy Park United, Ammar Soccer Academy and Batalions FC emerge as the biggest winners as the race for honours intensified across the competition.
Ammar Soccer Academy continued their impressive form on Saturday, edging FC Kayamandi 1-0 at Mbekweni Stadium to secure another crucial three points. The victory lifted Ammar to third place on the standings with eight points from four matches and a game in hand – keeping them firmly in touch with the pace setters.
Along with Grassy Park, they are the only two unbeaten teams in the stream thus far.
At Rustdene Sports Ground, second placed Batalions FC further underlined their credentials as one of the season’s surprise packages with a hard-fought 2-1 away win over Barcelona FC. The result ensured maximum points for Batalions and kept the pressure firmly on log leaders Grassy Park United, who sit on 13 points and hold a slender one-point advantage at the summit.
However, it was Grassy Park who stole the headlines. Andrew Pequeno’s charges produced the performance of the round on Friday evening, demolishing Relentless Football 5-1 at William Herbert Sports Ground. The emphatic victory not only strengthened their grip on top spot but also sent a clear warning to the chasing pack that they mean business this season.
Meanwhile, Maties FC finally got off the mark in Stream B. Under the guidance of coach Desmond Crowie, the side registered a convincing 3-1 victory over Mbekweni Cosmos at Lentelus Sports Ground. The win saw Maties climb to sixth position and provided a timely boost as they look to build momentum in the weeks ahead.
Last season’s stream winner Diadora FC had a bye after their opponents Ubuntu Spartans was cup tied in the Nedbank resulting in a rest weekend for coach Zain Abrahams and his assistant Sherwin Sauls.
