Sparks can fly in Coke Cup quarters

Safa Cape Town’s prestigious Coke Cup has reached the proverbial point where the men get separated from the boys after the Round of 16 was concluded at the Rooikrans Sportsfield on Sunday.

Needless to say, it dished up a few unexpected results which raised some eyebrows. Like when a former champion, Young Pirates from Heideveld, was bundled out by Gouldburn United (0-2) from the Metropolitan LFA in Bonteheuwel.

Another upset was that of Game Yethu from Philippi who succumbed to a spirited Lavender Hill FC (2-3) in a tightly contested affair.

This could all bode well for the defending champions, Diadora FC, as well as a former winner in Hanover Park, which both look unstoppable.

This comes after Shakes Mangaliso’s (coach) Diadora FC made light work of Table View FC with a 3-1 victory, while Hanover Park walloped Everton United by 4-0.

Diadora FC now faces Lavender Hill while Hanover Park cross swords with UWC after the students triumphed by 3-0 in a derby against CPUT.

Should both these big guns win their remaining two fixtures (quarter-final and semi-final) they will square up in the final on October 14th at the Athlone Stadium.

From a neutral point of view, this should be a humdinger as both teams are from the Hanover Park area and this derby could not only be explosive but could divide the Park as well. But first, they have to qualify for the final.

One team in particular that might have a say in this is Westridge FC who thrashed Salt River Blackpool by 6-0 to set up a quarterfinal tie with Hazendal United who beat Banfana United by 4-2.

Meanwhile, in the Ladies section, the usual suspects, Dangerous Heroes, Magic Ladies, Heideveld Female Football Academy (HFFA), Strand Kasi Queens, UCT Ladies, RV United, Cape Town Roses and Salt River Blackpool all progressed to the last 8 of the competition.

There are some real humdingers that await football fans with Dangerous Heroes versus HFFA being the pick of them.

RV United’s tie against UCT Ladies will also attract big interest. Roses would have too much ammunition for the Kasi Queens and so too should Magic Ladies have the edge over Blackpool.

That said, in a cup competition anything is possible on the day.

In the under-18 boys section it is anyone’s guess, but what is certain is that a new champion will be crowned after the holders, Cape Town City, pulled out of the tournament due to other commitments.

The current Bayhill Cup champs, Grassy Park United, will be right up there along with losing Bayhill finalists Cape Town Spurs, after wins over Ubuntu Academy and Greenwood Athletic respectively.

Grassy Park will now face Willows, while Spurs cross swords with The Greek Gods. This tie could also be considered as a derby due to their respective owners and don’t be surprised if the sparks fly.

Jomos Power will come up against Ulana Academy and CT Pirates will face Matroosfontein in the battle of the LFA clubs.
