Third Division log leaders Saxons showing no signs of slowing down, Premier dropped points in 2-2 draw at home to Silver Spurs

After six rounds in Safa Cape Town’s Third Division, Robbie Pretorius’ Saxon Rovers are still looking like the team to beat as they are placed rock solid at the summit – looking down at their rivals and saying: “Catch me if you can!”

Saxons opened the penultimate round of fixtures before the Festive break with a narrow 1-0 win over Antalyaspor JPM Cape Town thanks to a Elzade Paulse winner at the Royal Road Sport Complex in Maitland on Thursday evening.

This coupled with the fact that the only other unbeaten side along with the Saxons, Premier United, got a mini-scare following a rather surprising 2-2 draw against Silver Spurs at the Downberg Sport Complex in Hanover Park on Saturday.

Young Pirates FC’s statement victory of 3-1 against Greenwood Athletic at the Solo Street Astroturf on Friday should’ve send shivers down the spines of their rivals after a brace from Shiraaj Davids as well as one from Faizaan Jonathan, condemned coach Lionel Miller’s Green Machine’ to a third defeat in so many matches resulting in Greenwood slipping down to eight on the log.

Unfortunately for Pirates, Curtley Daniels’ Ashford Athletic took care of their business with a comfortable 2-0 win over the wooden spooners and winless Goodhope FC at the Rooikrans Sport Complex on Saturday.

Dylon Alberts was Ashford’s goal hero when he scored both goals which also denied Pirates the fourth position on the log.

Meanwhile, the Atlantis-based Jomos Power walloped the struggling  Wanderers FC by 7-2 at their Saxon Sea home ground in Atlantis for only their second win of the season.

So, too, did Matroosfontein claim a much needed victory and bragging rights after they edged out neighbours Trinitarians via a Randall du Toit penalty to claim bragging rights in a Northerns-derby at the Elsbury Park on Saturday afternoon.

I’m sure that Rygersdal FC’s head coach Ashraf Calvert would’ve taken a point all day as they were up against an exuberant Cape Town Spurs outfit during a 2-2 draw at Meadowridge on Friday evening.

Rygersdal twice took the lead via goals from Lisanda Nakile and Wagiet Damon but were cancelled out by Spurs’ Bakhe Sopaqa and Tasreeq Abdol.

Calvert was obviously the more relieved of the two coaches when the final whistle went, as with a bit more time, one felt that Spurs would have sneaked a winner as they were fired up in search of all three points – an enjoyable fixture with good football played ineed!

In other matches played on Friday, Cape Town City compounded Goal50 United’s woes with a 1-0 victory at the Malta Park Astroturf.

Meanwhile, the league’s top scorer thus far, Rushan Abrahams, extended his lead at the top of the scoring chart with another brace, his 13th for the season, during a 2-0 win away to JL Zwane in Gugulethu to get back to winning ways after their 2-4 defeat to Trinnies earlier in the week.

In the only match to be played on Sunday, Trinnies will be looking for redemption when they welcome Antalyaspor JPM Cape Town (15:00) to Uitsig Sport Field following their derby loss against Matroos a day prior.
