Two-time champion Diadora will not defend its Coke Cup title

It is a real shame and pity that Diadora FC, back-to-back winner of Safa Cape Town’s prestigious Coke Cup, will not be available to defend its title this season.

This comes after No Bones with Jones has been informed that the treble winning side from Hanover Park has pulled out of the coveted Coke competition for 2024.

This revelation surfaced when clubs needed to submit their squads for this year’s competition which starts on 19 May with the preliminary rounds, and the defending champion opted not to for strategic reasons.

The club’s player chairman Shaheed Abrahams waivered his opportunity to shed some light onto the matter.

“At this stage I have no comment,” Abrahams told No Bones with Jones.

Diadora, who ply their trade at the Athlone LFA, are one of the new kids on the block that has found a blueprint for success in its short existence.

Their winning formula is also not rocket science – the balance between the experienced and young troops as a collective has worked wonders for them.

It has been showing for the past two seasons already when they won their first Coke Cup in 2022 followed by a treble the following season (league title, a second Coke Cup as well as a Third Division promotion title).

They are probably weighing up their options to maintain their successful track record – who knows.

Diadora rewrote the history books by becoming the first male side in the modern era to win a treble of ‘major’ honours (League title, Coke Cup 2022, 2023 and Third Division promotional winners) as well as consecutive Coke Cup titles – so, it is fair to say that their absence is definitely a blow for the competition but at the same time it spells hope for other mission-driven rivals.
