Vasco da Gama versus Cape Town City…
This top-of-the-table clash is without a doubt the pick of the bunch of the midweek clashes of the Hollywoodbets Third Division campaign.
Vasco (54) has been setting the pace for a large part of the season due to their consistent performances thus far whereby they only lost two of their 26 matches, drawing nine and winning 15.
But, if there is one outfit that can set the cat amongst the pigeons during the business end then it is coach Bayron Cottle’s Cape Town City who is six points adrift in the second position.
Therefore, a lot rests on this fixture for coach Andrew Pequeno (pictured) and his troops tonight (19:30) at Parow Park.
Vasco kept their momentum going with a 2-0 win against FC Hout Bay over the weekend following the Easter break while City annihilated the relegation-threatened Woodlands United 8-0 at Malta Park on Saturday.
Pequeno’s comments made to No Bones with Jones suggested that he is indeed wary after he pointed out that they will give the young Citizens the necessary respect they deserve – albeit at their home ground.
“Cape Town City have been hammering teams in their last three games and are confident after a good showing at the Bayhill as well,” Pequeno warned. “I feel that they are in good form coming into our fixture and we shall continue to respect them as we do all our opponents.
“Coach Byron is getting the best out of his squad at the moment but we have home ground advantage. I hope our supporters come out in force tomorrow to support our boys,” Pequeno added.
The pressure will be more on the visitors as they also have two tricky fixtures after Vasco, with Silver Spurs (home) and Saxon Rovers (away) next up while the pacesetters travel to Wanderers FC and Trinitarians FC in two away games.
According to Pequeno the league is still very much open with the top five teams (Saxons, Crystal Palace and Matroosfontein – all 48 points) still in contention according to the Vasco mentor.
“Therefore, we are taking it game by game and not looking past the next game as the league is still wide open if you ask me,” Pequeno pointed out. “The log changes game by game so we are not looking ahead. We only worry about things we can control as there are eight games to go.” he concluded.
Rest of Tuesday’s fixtures:
Ocean View vs Jomos Power (19:30)
Saxon Rovers vs Greenwood Athletic (19:30)
