‘Targeted’ Rushan gutted and says punishment too harsh after ‘attack’ on official

Spare a thought for Silver Spurs FC, who would have been bolstered by the return of their former talismanic striker, Rushan Abrahams, for the 2026/’27 season.

This move will not materialise after a Safa Cape Town disciplinary committee found the 2025/’26 leading marksman guilty of violent misconduct following an attack on a match official during their 1-6 defeat against Cape Town Spurs in the last match of the Third Division campaign in Hanover Park.

The 31-year-old Abrahams, who has scored 30-plus (36) goals for a second time in three seasons, was slapped with a two-year suspension for his shenanigans against the official Ashley Skinner.

It’s believed that Skinner wrote a damning report after he was struck by Abrahams’ flinging arm following a confrontation with a Spurs player.

Our website approached Safa CT’s Secretary General, Reyaad Joseph, for confirmation; however, Joseph is too big for his boots to reply!

Be that as it may, Abrahams acknowledged that he should not have kept his cool and not allowed his emotions to get the better of him.

“I feel it is very harsh to suspend me for so long,” Abrahams conceded to No Bones with Jones. “There were other players who deliberately fought and committed worse offences than mine, but they got off lightly and did not receive this type of punishment.

“I mean, what happened to that case between Good Hope and Greenwood where they fought with the referee? Those players still played during the season!

“Most of what Safa CT heard was perjury from spectators and coaches of the opponents mainly. Was it because they couldn’t get my signature? I’m tempted to say that I’m being targeted because I’m loyal to the underdog, you know.

“Those who know me know that I like to play for the struggling club and help them. Maybe that’s a reason also? Had this been any other player, I’m sure the sentence would not have been so heavy. It’s like they have double standards.”

Abrahams has lifted and explained what really transpired from his point of view: “First of all, there’s a video that shows everything, and anyone can clearly see it was accidental.

“But, it all started when a Spurs player and I went for a 50/50 challenge…Now, I was already on a yellow and then after the tackle, I received another yellow and got sent off.

“Obviously, I was angry that I was punished alone and we both went in. After the tackle, I got up and was walking away when someone pulled my arm from behind.

“I immediately reacted and also pulled away and in the moment my arm came swinging and accidentally struck the person behind me in the face which happened to be the official – his nose was also bleeding and it looked a lot worse than what it really was, you know but I really didn’t mean it, honestly.  ” Rooh, as Abrahams is called, added.

According to Abrahams, the DC panel should have been more objective by taking into account his ‘clean’ track record as well.

“I’ve never done anything like this before and I don’t also have a bad reputation and they know this,” Abrahams protests. “Like I said, I made a mistake and I’m sorry, but there was no intent to harm the official or anyone else. So, how can they justify the 24 months?” Abrahams concluded.
